Update: The camera is released, it is certainly a very interesting release with a lot new introduced tech. But the price of 3.000 EUR is on the high side and we will see, if Olympus will sell it well. For me, no need to switch from my E-M1 but I am also not the targeted pro audience. In recent weeks, rumors were gathering that Olympus will release a new camera in January 2019, the Olympus OM-D E-M1X. According to 43rumors.com we can already expect the following (continously updated):
- Image stabilizer with + 7.5EV (that IS madness), you can handhold a few seconds and still get sharp images, bye bye tripod, best IS in camera business
- New 20 megapixel sensor, no global shutter but fast readout as E-M1 Mark II
- High-res mode out of hand, which would mean the camera will take 50 megapixel photos in Raw at 1/60s on static subjects without the need of a tripod; with tripod you can take 80 megapixel photos high-res
- Build in electronic ND filter, I am really curious, how it works. Update: It can simulate long shutter effects for still images only.
- Video on par with Panasonic Lumix GH5s, even regarding noise level
- 10bit video recording, Update: It has 8bit recording but a LOG profile for better dynamic range in post processing
- Portrait grip already build-in
- 2x processing power of E-M1II, continous shooting (with C-AF) 18 frames per second
- Adaptive, expandable focal points during autofocus
- C-AF tracking in general on par with Sony A9 or better
- Larger EVF than E-M1 MarkII with no blackouts, best EVF to date
- Weight 997g, Body (WxHxD) 144.4 x 146.8 x 75.4mm
- Excpected price: 3.000 € so not a cheap toy and more for professionals than the enthusiast crowd
Will it also bring a new sensor with better noise handling and more dynamic range? I’m really curious what else the new E-M1X will bring us and if it will replace my E-M1 eventually, even though it is still a very good performer. 🙂 Stay tuned.
